Cal well, P. M. Compton, E. L. Holmwood and Airs. T. R. Barrer. Apologies were received from Messrs. J. A. Freer, T. Jordan, D. A. Pickering and G. Selby.
Accounts totalling £42 14s 6d were passed for payment. The following appointments were made in connection with. the Technical School:—Home science, Miss E. I. Smith (Wyndham, Southland); art mistress, Miss C. J. Callanan (Feilding); student teacher (subject to approval of the department), Miss G. AL Brerctpn (Palmerston North). High School: Agricultural instructor, Air. B. Vealc (Tamahere, Waikato). The resignation of Mr. S. E. W. Futrell, commercial instructor at the Technical School was accepted. A plan of the proposed swimming baths at the High School was submitted and referred to the Works Committee for recommendation as to site and all further necessary information, including estimates witlj authority to collect water from the springs and so drain the swamp. The Works Committee reported that they had agreed to Mr. Heaps’s request, to remove the back boundary fence. Owing to the large influx of boarders, the Works Committee were authorised to spend approximately £5O m providing the necessary conveniences at School House. Airs. T. R. Barrer was authorised to consult with. Airs. Uttley regarding the provision of the necessary additional beds, crockery, cutlery, etc., with power to’ act.
The Principal of the High School requested that facilities should be provided for manual work for the boys and domestic and home science for the girls, suggesting in connection with the latter that a cottage should be taken adjacent to the school for teaching the girls in those subjects, including the care of infants.
Mrs. Barrer referred to previous resolutions of the board concerning the Principal’s requests and mentioned that the Government debentures were maturing in connection with, the present school buildings, and provided tho support of the Trust Lands Trust was available, a large portion of such debentures would no doubt be reinvested for carrying out the works suggested. Mrs. Barrer suggested that the board should select a site for a girls’ high school and build a cottage, aitfT thus form the nucleus of such a school.
The chairman explained the position in connection with the debentures which possibly could again be provided for in a similar manner. In opinion the provision of a junior high school would assist materially in the direction advocated by Airs. Barrer. After further general discussion, Mrs Barrer proposed and Air. Holniwood seconded, that the motion passed previously regarding increased accommodation be referred to the Works Committee with the addition of the provision for a home and domestic science cottage for- the girls, and that th? Finance Committee be requested to suggest methods of finance for carrying out the work.
