AN INDISCREET TEACHER.
The Magistrate at Nelson has dismissed a charge preferred against a school teacher of cutting the finger of a child with a kaifoj because the child had suggested cutting off the tail of a lizard. The Magistrate admitted that tho defendant was not justified in using a sharp instrument, and that his discretion had not been wisely used, but stated that it would be straining the language of the Act to say that tho child had been ill-treated. We confess that we are at a loss to understand the reasoning of the Magistrate. It seems to ub that n teacher who uses a sharp instrument upon a child is not only guilty of indiscretion, but is utterly unfit to occupy his position. The Education Board will be failing in its duty if it does not show its disapprobation of the teacher's conduct in a salutary manner.
