THE PUBLIC SERVICE.
While every honest man in New Zealand agrees that honest men employed in the Public Service in the Dominion should receive a pay which will 2)lace them on the same footing a3 the trade unionist, is, nevertheless, a widespread feeling that tne cost of administering tho affairs of this country is out of all proportion to tho population. It would seem that almost every other person one meets is in the employ of the State. Our population represents about that .of Liverpool or Manchester, and yet we require ten times as many people to administer our affairs. How many '' hangers on'' there are in the various Departments one will probably never know. But that there is need for tho application of the pruning-knife is generally agreed. Has the Government the courage to do the pruning? We shall see.
