THEATRE QUIETLY CLEARED.,
ENORMOUS DAMAGE DONE
SYDNEY, December 30
The premises of Groth and Company, oil and colour merchants, in George street,/have been gutted by fire for a second'time in twojvgars. The actual damage is not ascertainable, but it is estimated at about £30,000. The Empress Picture Theatre adjoining was packed when the outbreak was discovered. The roof of the theatre was alight before anyone realised the nearness of the flam-
es. , ' The tneatre was cleared in a tactful manner, an announcement being thrown on the screen to the effect that the performance was finished. The orchestra played for two minutes after the theatre was empty, the audience filing out quite unaware of the danger.
