NEW ZEALAND CHAMPION-
SHIPS.
TARANAKI MEN'S UXTQUE SUCCESS'.- "

The final of the New Zealand tennis championships was completed,' in Eden Epsom courts.- v On the whole the play was.of a high standard, and very few left the courts at the end of play without feeling that the tennis had been well worth the" 1 while. , A feature of the tournament was the success of A. G .Wallace and C. J. Deckie, of the Waverley Club (Taranaki), who carried off the doubles championships and also filled the positions of champion and runner-up respectively in the singles. It is some years since the Taranaki players took part in New Zealand championships, and this, makes thei* success allthe more creditable, *".-■ Miss A. Gray, Auckland, follotwed her sxiccess of last year,-and annexed the singles, championship. With Miss Baird she also carried off the ladies, doubles. - The results are as follow: — LADIES' SINGLES.
.The'final was contested by Misses A- Gray (Auckland) N and E. Baird j (Hawke's Bay). The first set- was all in favour of Miss Gray, who- played consistently. The set went ; tb'her by 6—3. Miss Baird played up well in the second ,set, and at .one stage led by 6—5. The games then alter-, nated to 7 all, when Miss Gray's persistence in lobbing gained for her a victory by 9—7. Miss Gray has now won the championship for two successive years, and by virtue of this carries off the rose bowl presented by Messrs F. H. Ayers, Ltd. COMBINED DOUBLES.
The outstanding feature of the final between K. H. K. Swanston and Miss Gray and G. Olliver and Miss Steele was the brilliant play of Ollivier, whose agility at the net gained ace after ace. Ollivier and Miss Steele took the first set 6—4, but lost the second 5—7. In the final set Ollivier and Miss Steele played splendidly, . and won by 6—4. MEN'S DOUBLES. /
A. G. Wallace and C. J. Dickie met Abbott and McCutcheon in th<Hinal. A good game was expected, but Taranaki won easily, 6—3, 6—l, 6—o. / - "':' MEN'S SINGLES.
Dickie beat Wallace in the first set 7 —5; ace led 2 love in the second, but his condition then gave out, and Wallace forged ahead, playing with great accuracy. Wallace, took the next two sets 6—2, 6—2, and then Dickie, owing to .his umdition giving out, retired. - The banner for the greatest number of points won was secured by Taranaki representatives, who scored 11 points, Auckland second with ?, Hawke's Bay and Canterbury 1£ each.
