THE LATE CARDINAL.
The news of tho'death of Cardinal Rampolla, • which is reported this morning, will he received with profound regret by Roman Catholics throughout the-world. The late Cardinal was Arch-Priest of the Vatican Basilica, and was regarded as a probabte sueeoSsor to tlie Papacy. He was horn in Sicily in 1843, and entered the Papal service in 1870. After occupying many important positions, he became Cardinal Priest and Secretary of State to the late' Pope Leo XIH. in 1887, and in tliis capacity he exercised a most important influence on tJie affairs of Europe. it', was lie who practically dictated the policy, of the; Vatican ;in temporal 'natters, and , -liis great knowledge and f personality gained-for him the respect of the whole civilised world. • His demise at a time when the policy of the Vatican was Undergoing important changes will be regarded ;us an overwhelming disaster.
