LABOURERS RETURN TO WORK

CHRISTCHURCH, Last Night,

After a temporary stoppage, caused by the heavy rain on Saturday, work was resumed in earnest on tho Lyttelton waterfront this morning, and the port was busier than it has been for nearly twelve months past. Practically every ship at the wharves was working cargo, and the. output was_ very satisfactory. Except at those ships wfoich were employing their own crews, members of the new Arbitration Union were working, and every available man was fully employed. The union, which has. been steadily growing in numbers, received several additions to-day, but there is still room- for more men.

The Corinthic started discharging at eight o'clock this, : morning, and was worked with members of her crew, seamen, firemen, and stewards and a small number of new unionists. The big steamer has 2000- tons of general cargo to land. The Corinthic will probably remain at Lyttelton .until Thursday, December llthi A very large quantity of wool, <lairy produce, and other cargo, has been booked for shipment at Lyttelton by the Corinthic, which will subsequently proceed to Auckland, Gisborne, and Wellington, to complete loading for London. She will be absolutely a full ship when she leaves WellingTon on December 20th. The Rimutaka has almost completed discharging her cargo from London, and ig._now busily engaged in loading operations. •■

Wool dumping is in full swing in the N.Z. Shipping Company's store, and already several hundred bales have been loaded by the Bimutaka. There was a busy scene at the Harbour Board wool stores to-day, where butter and cheese was being trucked for shipment. The Bimutaka is loading 10,000 boxes of butter, and about 800 craSes of cheese at. Lytteltpn. , The steamer Mimiro was t6 have been despatched on Saturday, but again tnis morning, and \k expected, to' sail f/or Duhedin. . The MaTere will sail on Wednesday for Dunedin.

The ferry steamer Pateena .put in a, very busy day's work, and' landed about 150 tons of cargo, chiefly transhipments from Wellington: She also loaded several trucks' of ; ijargo booked for that port. :,The Morning Light has finished discharging, and is now loading produce for Nelson and Waitapu. The Aratapu and Eliza Finch will be loading about Wednesday for Kaipara. ,

• The scow Eunice will sail for xHavelock to-morrow or Wednesday to load timber for Lyttelton. After shipping stores, for the southern lighthouses tHe Goveirnnient stqamer Miriemoa sailed thfs afternoon. She calls at Oodley Head, and will then . proceed" to, Akaroa Head and the southern lighthouses and West Coast sounds and bays.

Shortly after II a.m. the Canterbury Shipping Company's steamer Storm arrived from Wanganui with a shipment of cattle, w|iich were landed at the cattle jetoy.

The workers who were'; thrown, out. of employment owing to the port bcclosed, and to the strike of drivers; are rapidly resuming .work. •To-day all departments of the Atlas foundry (Messrs Scott Bros, Ltd.), with the exception of the moulding shop, were in full swing, and the majority of the hands at the Atlas confectionery works and at Messrs Aulsebrook and Company's biscuit and confectionery, works, were again in employment. Other trades affected aro gradually resuming active operations. Work on the No. 2 loan area in the borough of Spreydon was resumed this morning. All the old hands returned. ...••..
