MR JOHN PAYNE INTRODUCES A BILL.
WHICH IS PROMPTLY KILLED
WELLINGTON, Last Night,
In the House of Representatives this afternoon, Mr John Payne (Grey Lynn) moved the first reading of tliu State Control of Shipping nnd'Farmers' Protection Bill.' He contended that the present was a fitting time to-introduce a measure which wofuld put an end to distress arid the holding ui) of commerce which exists at present, owing to two parties, .mainly concerned in the .shipping business, being unable to agree. The Bill .also provided for the setting up of a Board of Consideration, consisting of representative members of the whole cominunitv, to whom would be submitted all Jifteronces which could not be settled Itv the parties concerned. Mr 1). Guthrie moved the adjournment of the debate till the 27th inst. Mr P. C. Webb objected to an ::d----journment, contending that Parliament should 1 ha.vo the courage to face a complex situation. Mr Hindmarsh contended that as the Government had not introduced legislation,: the House should take the matter into its own hands. 1 The' motion for adjournment of the. ! debate was carried.
