THE WATER LOAN.
We do not know what are the considerations that have influenced the Masterton Borpugh Council to take a poll of the ratepayers on the water supply loan proposal during the present month. The industrial crisis through which the Dominion, is passing may have a bad effect upon the proposal. Indeed, until they know the full measure of the injury That is being wrought by the deplorable strike, ratepayers would be no re than justified in refusing to saddle themselves wfCh. increased financial responsibilities. On tho other har/! it may be urged that, at a time of stringency, tradegman. would welcome the expenditures of a few thoiisand pounds in' loan. nltaiey. 5 For ourselves, we do not think the latter consideration would influence the majority of the ratepayers. Hence, we suggest that tho Mayor would be well advised in recommending the Council to defer the taking of a poll until the industrial conditions have .been restored to normal.
