THE TARIFF.

The New Zealand Times, which claims to have special facilities for procuring first-hand knowledge of Government intentions, states that the tariff proposals will include an increase in the beer duty, and reductions in the tariff on crockery and ironmongery. The beer duty increase was forecasted in the Age very nearly a month ago, and this is probably where the Wellington paper got its information. As for the duty on crockery or irotnmongery, the proposed changes are tho creation of a fertile imagination. The guess is a fairly shrewd one, but it is, w© are informed, very wide of tho mark. When tiie Governmen makes an announcement, it will do so in a constitutional way, and not by medium of an Opposition journal.
