Butter is being sold at Is 2d per pound in Ashburton. A thunderstorm passed over Masterton on Saturday afternoon last.

About 950 gallons of milk is being received daily at the Newman cheese factory. Five new members were elected at the monthly meeting of the Wairarapa Caledonian Society on Saturday last. The Land Bill passed its third reading in the House of Representatives on Saturday moriving by 39 votes to 14. A young lad has been arrested at Gisborne on a charge of breaking through an ironmanger's window and stealing five revolvers and 3000 cartridges. Some fine speciments of Shorthorn cattle, which have been purchased ly Mr R. D. D. McLean, and are en route from Victoria to his Maraekakaho station, Hawke's Bay,- were landed at Wellington on Friday from the Ulimaroa. According to the News, Mr B. Allen, of Clareville, has offered the Government for workers' homes or similar close settlement, eighty acres of land adjoining the Clareville railway station. This is said to : be the first occasion on which a voluntary offer of land for settlement has been made in tjiat neighbourhood. • .The following appears in the annual report of the Wairarapa Centre of the N.Z. Athletic -and Cycling Union:—The executive desire that special reference be made to the valuable services rendered to the centre by the secretary' (Mr W. Gillespie), and have insisted on his acceptance of a bonus of £5 5s in appreciation of his work. They also desire to place on reoord the great assistance rendered to the centre and to sport generally by the popular president (Mr M. Lavery) mainly through whose efforts the centre is in such a strong position to-day, and is so tteservedly popular with its affiliated clubs and l performers. Mr Lavery was unanimously re-elected president for tie third time, all the delegates concurring that it was, largely due to his legal training, tact, and good judgment that the centre holds its present enviable condition. The ordinary monthly meeting of the Wairarapa centre of the N.Z. Athletic and Cycling Union was held in the Dominion Hall on Saturday night, Mr P. C. Jorgenson occupying the chair. It was decided that a circular be prepared and sent to the secretary of each affiliated club together with a book of registration tickets, also that each registered runner be asked to obtain the yearly registration tickets early, so that they may obtain the full benefit of the official calendar, which is posted free to each registered' runner, the circular to be submitted to the president (Mr Lavery) for approval. On the motion of the chairman it was decided to record a vote of sympathy with the president on the occasion of his recent bereavement The secretary reported that the secretary of an affiliated club in Masterton had neglected to return the book of registration tickets issued to him last year, although repeatedly requested to do so. It was decided to refer the matter to the president, with power to act. The secretary was instructed, on the suggestion of Mr Arcus. to communicate with Messrs J. and N. To-morrow will be the anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar. The latest return from the 'Worksop dredge is 2240zs lodwts for 110 hours' work. The Clydesdale Horse Society of New Zealand has at present a membership of 389. Shearing will commence on several stations in the Masterton district as soon as the weather becomes settled. Mr J. C. Boddington reports that there were '29 points of rain registered at the Upper Plain on Saturday morning. The district towards the East Coast ha,s rarely looked better than at present, the recent rains having done an immense amount of good. A superior line of fat bullocks is being despatched from Masterton today for the Hastings show. They represent the herds of Sir Walter Buchanan and Mr H. K. McKenzie. Local anglers continue to get good sport in the rivers and streams in the Masterton district. One party during the week-end secured a very nice bag of brown trout, one of which weighed four pounds. A collision occurred near Masterton on Saturday afternoon between cars driven by Messrs Petherick, junr., and McKenzie. Both cam were considerably knocked) about, but it is fortunate that neither of the occupants were injured. A representative of the Shearers' Union, informed an Age representative last night that there is considerable dissatisfaction at the "dagging" clause in the shearers' award, and it 'is improbable that the shearers will consent to the award being extended beyond one year. The arrangements made by the committee appointed by the Wairarapa P. and A. Society to dispose of the privileges of the luncheon room and tea kiosk at the society's show, should prove very satisfactory to the visiting public. Conditions have been agreed upon which include provision for a good lunch at the reasonable charge of Is 6d.
