THE Y.M.C.A.
The decision of the Board of Managers of the Y.M.C.A. to take steps to wind up the affairs of the institution in Masterton will be received with very general regret. For some time past it has been apparent that the public enthusiasm; in respect to the institution has been waning, and, that the finance, required, to cnaintam ifte branch would be difficult to arrange. .The, appeals! that have been made have not met with the response anticipated, ©nd the Board of Managers is compelled to take decisive action. The loss of the gymnasium in itself would be severely felt; but the closing of an institution that has done a very great deal to provide healthy recreation for the young people of the town will be a public calamity. The collapse of the Y.M.C.A. in a. NC-Jieense district would have a, bad moral effect throughout the Dominion, for it would demonstrate the inability of the people to find a wholesome substitute for the bar-rooms of the hotels*.
