THE AKITIO RIVER.
QUESTION OF IMPROVING IT. A REPORT ~ASKED FOR. The Pongaroa Chamber of Commerce is anxious to get a report on the question of improving the Akitio river, ahd with that object in view wrote to the Wellington Chamber of Commerce, urging that it should assist in getting the Minister for Marine to authorise the preparation of a report. This matter came before the council of the Wellington chamber on Monday. The chairman (Mr C. W. Jones) pointed out that the council was urging the Government to construct a light railway through the district, ' and it would perhaps Hardly do to support the f scheme of river improvement. This b was to have a number of rocks re- ■ moved from the mouth of the river, and it >vas estimated that if .this were done the carriage of goods by steamer would be considerably reduced. The council unanimously agreed, nfter consideration, to support the Pongaroa chamber in its efforts to get a report.
