JOCKEYS' ACCIDENT FUND.
A vigorous controversy is being eonducted in the newspaper press of the Dominion over the 'proposal of the
Racing Conference to utitfew the jdckeys' accident fund for a purpose other than that for which it was primarily intended. It has been pointed' out in support of the action of the conference that the fund was really established by horse'-owners to protect themselves against claims under the Compensation for Accidents Act. If this be the case, then the conference should most certainly consult the owners before it diverts the fund into another channel. It is really a trust fund held for the benefit of jockeys who may be maimed while (following their profession. As such, it should be protected by law. A question in the House produced the reply from the Minister that Parliament hod no control over the fund. Strictly speaking, that may be correct. But, when it appears to Parliament that a body of men are not regarding a trust with sacredness, it is surely its duty to provide the necessary legal safeguards.
