STATE COAL MINES.
It will eonae as a surprise to the community to learn that, in gpiter-ef the faet that an increase was made in the price of State coal last year, the State coal mines were run at a lose, fdr th« period, of £9989 10s Id. It is quite clear that this unsatisfactory condition of affairs cannot be allowed to continue. • The people in the country districts derive very little, if any advantage from the State coal mines, and it is most improper that they should be asked to bear their share of the loss sustained in providing cheap coal for the denizens of the cities. If the State Coal Department cannot be run on business lines, and be made to pay, it is time that the Government considered the propriety of cldsing down the mines, or of disposing of them to private individuals or companies.
