COST OF DEFENCE.
A lengthy debate took place in the House of Bepresentatives yesterday on the Defence Department vote, which amounts this year to the respectable sum of £505,047. The Ministed stated that Parliament would have to increase the vote next year by £50,000 or £60,000. Several members protested that too much money was being expended upon the system. For ourselves, we maintain that if the system is worth having, it is worth paying for. What we are desirous of seeing is results. Are we getting value for the half-million that is 'being expended on defence? That is the crux of the whole question. If we are not getting value, then let us abandon the thing, and revert to the old system of Volunteering. But we must first give the scheme a fair trial.
