CONSISTENCY.
The Minister of Customs is credited with having stated some time back that consistency was the "refuge of fools." We are not prepared to argue that point just here. We do know,, however, that consistency is not one of the strongest traits in the character of the Opposition in the New Zealand Parliament. For instance, when the Government brought down its proposal to increase the income tax exemption from £3OO to £4OO to persons with families of four children, the Opposition insisted that this was placating the "fat man." Now we find Mr Vigor Brown, M.P., advocating the taxation of "people who are in, receipt of incomes of two, three and four thousand and onward, not .those who were in receipt of £3OO a year or so." Precisely. This is what the Government proposes in its measure. And yet Mr Vigor Brown and his Opposition friends protest. The Opposition may not be quite as foolish as it looks. It is certainly not consistent.
