The condition of Mr W. Gj Beard, of Masterton, was reported last evening to be about the same. He is still very weak. It <is rumoured that Mr Timothy Cotter, of the (fraud Hotel, Hastings, and formerly of Pahiatua and Dannevirke, intends taking over the Caledonian, Hotel in Napier. A cablegram from Rome states tJiat His Holiness the Pope is suffering ifrora a slight cold, and that the doctors insist on his resting. Mr and Mrs G. Swan, of Wang&nui, will be visitors to Masterton during "Geisha" week. Mr Swan is stage manager for the Wanganui Operatic Society. Mr David Piokering, senr,, one of the old identities of Masterton, who has been residing for some years at Oriental Wellington, has been on a visit to friends in this town.
Mrs S. Wickenden,, an old settler of Masterton, underwent a serious operation yesterday, it being found necessary to amputate one of her legs.. She is making as good progress as can be expected in the circumstances. , ! 1
Mr MbHattie, postmaster at Greytown, is at present on holiday leave. During his absence, his place is being filled by Mr Newton, with the assistance of an official from Wellington.
Mrs x Christina Arnott, relict of the late -.-Mr John Arnott, one of the founders of the Grey River Argus, and afterwards in partnership in the Hastings Standard with Mr Oashion, formerly of Masterton, died in Wellington this week. Sir Joseph Walton, M.P., F.R.G.5,., who has travelled extensively in the Far East, haa arranged to make a tour of New Zealand in order to study affairs political and commercial. He is due to arrive at the Bluff on September 29th, and intends to visit Lake Wakatipu, Dunedin, Christchurch, the Buller and Otira Gorges, Wellington and Rotorua, before finally sailing from Auckland. The Auckland Star of Thursday says: "Mr and Mrs Booth, of Carter-1 ton, accompanied by Miss Booth, arrived in Auckland yesterday, and have taken up their quarters at the Grand Hotel.
Mr Andrew McDougall, for many years Crown Lands ranger in the Otago land district, stationed at Pembroke, has resigned from the, Lands Department and intends settling down in the North Island. The death is announced of Mr John Brooking, late Land Purchase Officer, and Commissioner of the Native ''Land Court at Gisborne. 'Deceased was a member of a, very old Poverty Bay family, and served with particular distinction through the whole of the. Maori disturbances in that district, having been twice mentioned in dispatches for conspicuous gallantry.
l)r G. M. Chapman, M.R.C.8., a son of his Honour Mr Justice Chapnan, has .been appointed Receiving Room Officer at the London Hospital. Dr Chapman recently passed his examination for M 8., Cambridge, A London cable announces the death of Mr John Gibb Dunlop, shipbuilder, and at one time superintendent engineer for the Orient Company. He also introduced the triple, expan-, sion engines to the Australian service.
A Wellington Press Association message announces the, death last evening of Mr Robert Chisenhall Hamerton, for many years in the Government service, and at one time Public Trustee. The deceased was 75 years of age. According to a Press Association message, the Southland Education Board yesterday received the resignation 6f Mr Edmund Webber, headmaster of the South School. Mr Webber has been forty-four years in the education service in New Zealand, thirty-six of which has been passed in the service of the Southland Board. Sydney papers announce that Mr Ben Fuller has joined the directorate of George Willoughby, Ltd., the theatrical firm which" recently acquired the business interests of George Marlow, Ltd., and which controls the Adelphi Theatre, Sydney, and the Princess Theatre, Melbourne. Mrs Joseph Grant, the popular postmistress at Gladstone, is at present away on three weeks' holiday leave, the time being spent in Wellington and Napier. Miss Shields, of St. Albans, Christchurch, is relieving. Mr~X D. Smith, manager for Booth and Co., Carterton, who is at present in the Greytown Hospital, where he has undergone an operation for appendicitis, will, in all probability, return to his home in Carterton on Sunday.
