Mr Frederick Harrison, the Postivigt, in a letter to the press, states that the idea of raising money for the encouragement of athletes to compete in the Olympic Games stinks of gate money and professional pot-hunting. Each ctandidatei will cost £IOOO. and he- will have to be nursed ,and maintained in racing condition by the public. "Blackguardly yelling, graft, and sharp practice will soon degrade oux Oflympias to the level of a mob at old-established prize-fights." TALE OF NATIONAL DISASTER. 'Times*—'Sydney Sun' Special Cables. (Received Last Night, 6.40 o'clock.) LONDON, August 27. The Duke of Westminster, in" re* plying to Mr Harrison, declares that England's losses in sports make a .tale of national disaster, America having won at polo, racquets, yachting, tennis, trotting, 200 yds, 440 yds, 880 yds, hurdles and high pole jumps, putting the weight; and throwing the hammer. Australia won at swimming and billiards, Canada at lacrosße and shooting, Sweden at skating, France at fencing and cycling, France and America at boxing, New Zealand the. tennis singles, and Africa the 100 yds and also won at Rugby. He offers to bet'that Mr Harrison will subscribe to the fund before 'it closes.
