CHESS.
A TELEGRAPHIC MATCH. On Saturday evening last, in the Druids' Hall, the Mastorton Chess Club tried conclusions with the Hamilton Chess Club in a telegraphic match. The Hamilton team an this occasion, however, proved victorious by the substantial margin of five games to one, with two unfinished games to be adjudicated upon. The Masterton players—F. Kummer. Jones, Moore, I)agg, White, Guild, Youle and H. Kummer —were pitted against Mears. MrCrea. Gouig, Baugh, Bullock. Wright, Mahon and Stevens, of the Hamilton Club.. Guild and Jones drew their games; Moore, Dagg, Youle and H. Kummer suffered defeat *. and the games of F. Kummer and White have br-en seat forward for adjudication. The local arrangements (in the hands of Mr Kemble Welch, the Club secretary"* were all that could be desired; Mr F. P. Welch acted as umpire for the Hamilton Club, and Messrs S. J. Thompson, Hoffeins and Welch assisted as scrutineers. Tlie supper was provided by C. Winchester. The thaiußs of the Masterton team are due to Mr Moore, of the local Post Office, and to his officers for their courtesy and assistance which enabled the whole match to run without a hitch, the officer in charge of the Morse instrument at this end being Mr J. Stevens/ Honours are now even between the two clubs, and the local players are anxious for the "conqueror," to prove that Saturday's disaster was the outcome rather of misfortune than of incapability.
