DESERTERS FROM WARSHIPS.
A SERIOUS STATEMENT.
(Bit Telegraph.—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, Last Night. Ten men were reported to be missing; fro-n the battleship New Zealand when she Auckland on S<vtuiu<iy. A« important statement on the subject \v<is made by the H<>n. A, L. Herdman to-day. He said information in. his possession rnade it clear thajb members of the ship's companj had been enticed to desert from the service by some employees of labour, promising high wages. The liberty the men were given to wear plain clothes had enabled them to desert. Mr Herdman stated that he knew of instances where the men had been tempted to desert, and had later repented their decision, and had difficulty in returning. Liquor had also been taken on board and given to the men by visitoi*s. He quoted sections of the Naval TUsciplii e Act, 18G6, which was operative in New Zealand, imposing a penalty of £3O for assisting deserters.
