HON. JAMES ALLEN.
ENTERTAINED IN WINNIPEG.
THE ORIENTAL MENAGE. (Received Last Night, 5.5 o'clock.) OTTAWA, May 10. The Ham James Allen, New Zealand Minister of Defence, was entertained by the Camadiau Club at Winnipeg. Speaking in response to the toast of his health, Mr Alljn outlined the naval and military progress that had been made by JNew Zealand. He stated that should the time ever come when Canada was menaoed New Zealand would be able to throw an- expeditionary foroe, 80,000 (?8,000) strong to aid in the defence of Canada. Defence questions were, he said, more pressing in NVw Zealand than in other parts of the Empire, because of its proximity to the Far East. This brought the question of an 'Oriental memaoa into a possibility. He again urged the necessity for Canada, New Zealand and Australia cooperating to safeguard the s?a lines of the Pacific.
