The fortnightly meeting of the | Carterton Volunteer Fire Brigade I was held an evening, Captain McKenzie presiding. Accounts amounting to £1 2s 3d were pasted for payment. Correspondence was read from thl? lte>raigh Council, granting the Brigade permission to' erect a pra-ctice platform on the reserve. A committee was s.t up to make arrangements for the opening euchre tourney on May 16th. It wa*> decided that aggregate prizes "" be given to the winners of each tourney, and that special punches he procured for marking tickets. Three lic-w members were proposed, ajid -Messrs W. Taylor and B. 'Roberts were elected honorary members. The statutory meeting of the Cartortem Borough Council was held on Wednesday evening;, when. His Worship the Mavor (Mr Faistfi and Crs. B. Roberts,'A. S. Judd, J. Callister, W. Fisher. .. H. Hughes, .W. H. Baillie, L. H. Smart and F. E. Tyler were duly sworn in. The Mayor, welcomed th-2 old councillors, and expressed pleasure at seeing the now ones duly installed. He gave a brief resume, of the general working of this borough, and advised councillors to study carefully the financial position cf the borough kifore promising to see any requests carried out. He spoke of the revenue and expenditure of the borougn, giving rate* about £I4OO, and maintenance, etc.. £SOO, leaving about £9OO to expend on 'necessary works. His aim was? to decrease the overdraft of the borough each year by_£loo. and he wanted to do this withou taffocting the general progress of tlie borough. Roads were the fir,st consideration, and then the upkeep of the footpaths. After those two works the most urgent necessary work would be attended to. Committees were apoointed as under: Works, The Mayor, Crs. Callister, Roberts and Fisher; das, Crs. Hughan (chair\ Hughes and Judd; Baths, Crs. Tyler and Hughes, Messrs J. A. Dudsen. and C. J.
