AN ENGINEER COES MAD. AXD SHOOTS HIS FAMILY. i Received Last Niccht, 8.45 o'clock.) MELBOURNE, May 2, A terrible domestic tragedy is reported from Ballarat. Percy Coates, ain engineer, who is a recent arrival from England, appears to have become suddenly mad. Mi's Coates, who was cooking the breakfast, was shot in the back with a revolver by her husband. As she fled, a second shot entered her arm. She ran to tue police station. The police, on" going to the house, found a boy, aged' four, shot dead. A hoy, aged five, was alive, but was shot : n the head and wrist. Coatee himself was unconscious, and was shot in the temple. Contes, who is not expected to recover, had lately been depressed.
