RAILWAY FATALITY.
A SHUNTER KILLED. (By Telegraph. — Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Last Night. John Poppelwell, a shunter at the Mina, railway station, near Cheviot, seventeen years of age, whilst engaged in shunting operations yesterday afternoon, was knocked down by a truck, which passed over his left arm and leg, almost severing them from the body. He was brought to town* and taken to the hospital at 7.30 p.m. in a state of collapse. He soon afterwards became unconscious, and died at 9.1*5 p.m. An inquest wa« opened to-day, when evidence as to identification and the nature of the injuries was taken. The coroner, in adjourning the inquest till Wednesday, drew the- attention of the representative of the Railway Department to the fact that the deceased was represented by counsel, which indicated that an attitude adverse to the Department would probably be taken up.
