THE RAILWAY STRIKE.

CABLE NEWS

(United Press Association — By Electric Telegraph — Copyright.)

DISPUTE SETTLED. ROYAL COMMISSION ACCEPTED. WORK TO BE RESUME]) AT ONCE (Received Last Night, 9.30 o'clock.) SYDNEY, April 9. The railway strike is over. The men have accepted the Government's Royal Commission with .some modification, and a provision that there will be no victimisation. They will resume forthwith. The mass meeting of the men which carried the acceptance of a Royal Commission lasted three hours, after conferring with the Hon. A. C. Carmichael, and obtaining certain modifications in the terms of the Commission. Mr Catts (Federation secretary) and several members of the Labour Council addressed the meeting, strongly advocating the adoption of the Commission. The carrying of the resolution accepting the amended terms was marked by an enthusiastic demonstration. The modifications which turned the scale were that the conditions of labour about the railway goodsheds •should be dealt with prior to other subjects covered by the Commission ; and that there should be no victimisation. All parties are gratified over the settlement. The men's leaders claim that the :ai!'\vay men demonstrated their unity, solidarity and strength, and •mpressed the public with their 'grievances, and obtained from the.. Government a constitutional means of ventilating and remedying these grievances, which is denied by the Arbitration Court. Out of 700 strikers there were only half a dozen defections. In other quarters it was stated that there were signs of wavering. A number of strikers resumed duty in the morning, and failing the acceptance of the Commission, the strike would liave broken down. The men will resume on the regu'ar .shifts on Friday, but before the goods service is properly restored, the terms of the Commission covers an inquiry into the operation and effect 'if industrial awards upon the whole railway service, and provides, in the event of the conviction of an em•dovee by the Arbitration Court, for ■triking, such convictions not to jush'fv dismissals.
