CARTERTON NEWS.

Our Own Correspondent. In the Police Court on Thursday morning, a man named Charles King was charged with vagrancy, and with soliciting alms in Carterton. There were several previous convictions against accused, and a sentence of one month's imprisonment was imposed. The local Homing Pigeon Club will hold its first race on Saturday, from Cross' Creek. A valuable sheep dog belonging to Mr W. B. Allen, of Clareville, was ryn over and killed by a motor car 011 Wednesday afternoon. The -unfortunate dog was working sheep at the time, and apparently did not eee the approaching car. A nephew of' Mr J. Montcrieff, of Carterton, writing from Japan, after a three weeks' holiday in China, gives a very interesting account of what he obseirved on his journeys. Wherever he went the conversation was of the new Chinese Government, and! he found that Yuan Shili Kai, the President of the new Republic, is regarded as the man of the hour, audi a high opinion is held of his ability and sincerity of purpose. Mr Moncriei? learned that Yuan Shall Kai appreciates very fully the" good work missionaries have done for China, aawl at the Y.M.O.A. Convention in Pekin made a wonderfully appreciative address in connection with rha'ssionary work and aims. Complaints are being made about the reckless manner with which some motor cars are controlled by their drivers. It may not be generally recognised that residents can assist the authorities by keeping an eve out for the reckless drivers, and handing their names into the police together with the number of the car. It only wants a few. examples in this direction, and the nuisance would cease.
