GABLE NEWS

{United Prw A*l:iation—By Mettrio Telegraph — Copyright.)

PERRY SERVICE DISLOCATED. THOUSANDS OF HOLIDAY SEEKERS DISAPPOINTED. (Received this Morning 12.5 o'clock.) SYDNEY, MARCH 21. The holidays are likely to be largely 1 spoiled by the sudden tying up of tie greater portion of the ferry services. Trouble has been rife amongst the Ferry hands far a considerable time, owing to delay by the Wages Board in dealing with their grievances. A strike was threatened early in the Irionth, but was averted by the Hon. A. O. Carmicheal intervening, and promising to have the proceedings of the Board expedited. TMs arrangement has apparently proved unsatisfactory as this morning travellers, on reaching the wharves after nine o'clock, found the steamers in moat of the services tied up and desorted. The people were thus unable to cross, the. harbour, and Good Friday was greatly devoted to" family picnics, and attending the Agricultural Show. As the day wore on great crowds of disappointed picnicers and Show visitors were massed at both ends of the services. The devolopement of the strike was so sudden that the people did not know till at the wharves. Those at the City end were able to avail themselves of the trains to go elsewhere or to Manly, to which the steamers continued to run. Crowds at North. Sydney and at other parts across the harbour were compelled to -return home, or reach their." destinations by circuitous routes. Boatmen and launches reaj>ed a rich harvest, from those willing to pay a shilling or more for a wonted penny trip. The strikers point out .tliat the Wages Board, sitting one day weekly, had been six weeks in" taking the unfinished evidence of the Ferry Coy's manager, and state that at that rate of progress their turn would never come. Shortly after the strike (started the representatives of the men conferred with the Ferry who offered, if they, returned to work, . that the company; would! agree to make, any award given by the Bo«rd; retrospective from JfllHlary Ist. . Thiq was"not- agreeable to . the younger section of striker*, who. are in''the majority, and v'sa injected.
