AFFLICTED CHRISTCHURCH.
The Duneclin Stfti', which cannot be accused of being blinded by political prejudice, takes the people of Christchurch severely to task for their brutal treatment of the Prime Minister. The Star says:—
"Civilisation iis surely not more backward in Ckriyt church than elsewhere in New Zealand! The trouble seems to be that a certain parasitic growth, which nowadays afflicts civilised communities, and which some people think seriously threatens their existence as such, appears to 'find more congenial soil and atmosphere in Clirlstchurcb than an other parts' of New Zealand. ... The patient who reassures himself that an. insidious growth will disappear of itself in time would . not be considered a' together wise. A surgical operation may not be pleasant, but it is sometimes the only remedy. The question euggests itself whether Christehurch might not do worse than at least consider an operation —not merely because Mr Massev was interrupted while delivering a political si>eech, but because (unless mere noise deceives the outside world) an affliction from which it has long suffered seems to be becoming very much worse."
