The time is not far distant when the overseas possessions of tho Empire "'ill demand not only an All-Bed cable, but a cable- controlled by the respective Governments, instead of by private individuals. The cable service, at the present time, constitutes one of the greatest monopolies the world possesses. Pressure from Canada and the Australasian States has composed certain reductions in the charges, but these have Leen small as to' be almost unworthy of notice, ff the overseas dominions a,re Ho be brought into closer touch with. the heart of tho Empire, the on bio connection will ha.ve to be cheapened and improved. The matter has been receiving the attention of the Imperial Government, and ' of Colonial Governments, but the progress made has been exceedingly slow. we possess an All-Red coble, tho position will continue to be unsatisfactory.
