The captain of the steamer chnron has been fined £7OO in connection with the discovery of seven Chinese stowaways aboard his vessel. The evidence showed that they existed for three weeks in cavities scooped in th© coal. They were unable to stand up. The Chinese members cf the crew lowered, food and water to them.
It was discovered that a relative of one of the stowaways, while previously attempting to reach Australia hidden in the coal, was .suffocated when the steamer was being fumigated.
