FLOGGING ORDERED
AN AUCKLAND WARNING. V KRAL PRISONERS TO RECEIVE THE LASH. (By Telegraph.-—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, Last N^iit. In sentencing Thomas Hammond, a young man convicted of indecent assault on a little- girl. Mr Justice Edwards yaid the Grand Jury had ro .'cnimended him to make representations which would result in an alteration of the law. to provide for the u -c of the lash, tie said that in cases he already had power to order iloggiug, and he intended in all these "ases to inflict floggings. The number ot strokes in the case was not an indication of the number, which would be materially increased, and made a severe punishment instead.of only a severe warning. He sentenced the accused to three pears' imprisonment, and to receive ten strokes of the lash. Robert Connor and Frank Rhodes, old men, who were guilty of assaulting little girls, Avere sentenced to three years each, and five strokes of the lash. The Judge said the gaoi iurgeon would be in attendance. :-nd would stop the la*h if it was bevnnd the endurance of the prisoners. Wdliani Charles Spraggri, a young man, for a s'milar offence, was sentence;! to three years, and ordered to receive ten lashes. Thomas Loch, aged 52, was found guilty of carnal knowledge on a girl under 1G years. The Judge said that by a flaw in the -Crimes Act ho was unable to order the lasli, although in cases of indecent assault, which were really minor charges, had the power. He sentenced the accused to five years' hard labour, and said he ■would make rcnresenrations with the object of having the lav. n.m ended.
