AN AUCKLAND JOKE.
The Hon. George Fowlds stai&s'that the/ bulk of the people about Auckland have never taken the present Government seriously. T'nferentiallv he says' that the electors were n.erely joking when they turned down the Wardi candidates at the la.st election, and plumped for tlie Reformers. In Grey Lynn, of course, there must have been an exception. The people of that enlightened electorate rejected Mr Fowlds in favour of Mr John Payne, who is a sort of "nobody's darling." It is hardly to he expected that a constituency that would not take Mr Fowlds seriously would treat the Government, or anything- but Mr John Payne, as other than a joke. But, if Auckland doe, 3 not take the present Government seriously, its joking propensities are really'sublime. They will get it down one of these fine davs, and then there will be no Exhibition !
