THE LASH.
•While the lash is one of the most brutal forms of punishment that could be administered, it would seem that there are 110 other means provided for checking the growth of that revolting class- of crime that lias gained for the northern city so unenviable a notoriety of late. Unfortunately the general public is not aware of the severity of the punishment of flogging, so that the value of the sentences imposed by Mr Justice Edwards as a deterrent is not ca.sily assessed. Itmight be well if a- cinematograph picture were taken of a criminal undergoing the punishment of flogging. If such a picture wer e screened in the jpublic halls of Auckland, it might result in a visible diminution in the number of crimes against women and children.
