EMPIRE TRADE COMMISSION.
T'iio investigations of tho Empire Trade ■Commission, which is about to take evidence in New Zealand. I'ave been narrowed down to such an extent that it is open tc question whether they will bo of any real .service to the Empire. Kor reasons of its own, the Biiti-di Government refused to permit the fiscal question to come ir.uler Hi? purview ci' the Oonimi-ssi'on. Everybody must know that this is th? most important issue at present in volvcd in tho trade relations betwera the different, parts of tho Empire. All other questions pale into insignificance before it. And yet it does not appear in the order of reference. If tho trade of this, and other parl- ; of the British possessions, is to expand as it should do, there will require to be an adjustment of tariffs, and a real preference will have to be given to British-matnufaetwred goods. The Home Government appears to lie more jealous of the votes of the. misguided "free-fooders" than it is of the development of the overseas Dominions.
