FIRE IN QUEEN STREET

PROMPT ACTION BY THE BRIGADE. About twenty minutes past twelve" o'clock this - morning Nightwatchman Braggins noticed smoke issuing from the tobacconist shop of Messrs React and Douglas', Queen street. He promptly gave the alarm at the Queen, and Church street corner bell, and in. a remarkably short space of time the brigade were at the scene of tlio conflagration. The fire, which was centred in the front part of the shop, was rapidly spreading amongst the highlyinflammable stock. The members of the brigade, under Jenkins , got to work with a will, and by means of a single lead of hose the outbreak was soon under control. The whole of the stock was practically destroyed, the fire having apparently started at the back of the c oir.it ?■]% The quick discovery of the firs and the prompt action of the biigade is highly commendable, as the building is situated in- the middle of a large block of wooden buildings. Supt. Jenkinsj, interviewed by representative of the Age. stated that a very fair pressure of water was obtained '<'ith the single load of hose, usfed. The building and stock is insured, but '■V amount was not available when goi-\g to press.
