THE SLAUGHTER MEN.

The trouble with the slaughtermen in various parts of tho Dominion seems | to be gradually adjusting itself, if one Us to judge by the reports from the different works. In Gisboruo and Hawkc's Bay free labour is apparently giving entire satisfaction, the work of the men, though comparatively slow, being u;p to the required standard. In other places applications for hooks have been coming in freely, and the companies arc satisfied that work will be carried on at a fair rate of speed within a week or two, when the new hands will have become accustomed to their duties. It was stated yestordayM-bat several settlers from the South Wairarapa. had left to man the boards at the Wellington works. At present, it iseems as if the butchers, who have gono on strike, will not gain their demands, and unless the Watersiders' Union decides to refuse to handle "free labour" meat, there is every probability of tho season being finished under free labour conditions. Until the meat is pub on the London market, it will not be possible to judge whether the killing done by more of less inexperienced butchers will affect the price. The arrival of the first shipment, on tie Home market will be awaited with interest.
