FATAL ACCIDENT
ON AUCKLAND WHARF. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, Last Night. A fatal accident occurred on board the steamer Matatua at the railway wharf this afternoon, when a'waterside worker, named Ernest Alfred Bowles, received such fearful injuries that he expired almost immediately. The deceased was working cargo in the hold when a case became detached from' the sling and fell 35 feet, striking the unforunato man a terrific blow on the temple. The deceased was 35 vears of age, and leaves a wife and three children. The present makes a total of thirty accidents which have occurred on the Auckland wharves since December 30th, two of which have proved fatal. The Watersidor's Union decided at the last general meeting, that in future all work should cease on the wharves for 24 hours in the case of a member of the Union being killed rr dying from injuries received, whilst working on the wharf, and all the shipping companies notified to this effect. The secretary of the Union informed a reporter' that aV far as be could at present state, the decision arrived at by his Union would be carried into effect in the present case.
