NATIVE LANDS.
A deputation of .prominent Hawke'-s Hay Nativ&s that waited upon the Hon W. H. Harries at-Hastings requested that ...better facilities be offered for the disposal of sunplrus Native lands, and "that the money derived should be held in trust by the Government for the benefit of the .Native race. This is precisely the policy that has been advocated in these columns for months past. The Maoris are as desirous a.s their European brethren to .see the waste areas of the Dominion brought into profitable occupation. Under the tribal system of ownership this is impossible. There seems to us to be no good reason why the Native laud should not be acquired by the Government as soon as funds are available, leaving the question of ;individualisa.tion to be proceeded with as opwortunity offers. If we have to wait until the individual interests of the Natives aro defined by a Land Court, the .settlement of the land will be postponed for an indefinite period.
