THE SOUTHLAND TRANSACTION.
A great nofso is being made by the Opposition press : over a \3aiid trail-, saction in Southland, in which a lessee-: in-pe rpofcuity lias; acquired tlie ireeliolcV of his .land.'and with it certain' vain-, able coal deposits. The- Qppositfomsts;
forgot that, while the lessen had probably made an excellent bargain, tho.State has lost nothing. I.> it reasonable to suppn-e that the lessee would have acquired the fee-simple had tho land been assessed at a capital value which included minerals' And if lio did not convert into freehold, what claim would the. State have upon the coal dcric-iU? As we pointed out in a previous issue, the i transaction i.s quite legitimate, and it should not bo in the samo breath with that of Mokau. Supposing that the coal were on an o.r.p. section, woaild tho State have any right or titlo to it? [f it has not, what right or title has it to the coal when it is on a lease-in-perpetuity section?
