(From Our Own Correspondent.) The combined -spell of dry weather is having a decreasing effect upon the milk supply at the v.lnous dairy lactories in the district. The pastures are getting very -dry, an d a few dayrain would be a welcome visitor. The bridge across the at Mataraua, which is being used during repairs to the Black Bridge, is •no,v found to lie unsafe for heavy traffic;. Steps are being taken immediately to repair the weakened portion, "and the danger will probably soon be removed.
A peal on the ftrebell called the brigade out on Monday afternoon. A shed at the rear of Mr F. E. lyler's blacksmith shop had caught (ire, it is thought from a spark from a furnace near by, which was being used to heat wheel tyres. A bucket brigade, which fortunately had a plent:ful supply of water, wore able to (juenoh the. flames without the assistance of the brigade. A grass fire at the back of -Messrs Savage and Souman'x furniture ware-house-was. responsible for an alarm no the bell on Sunday morning. Before the brigade had time to arrive the conflagration was beaten out by willing helpers.
