THE SLAUGHTERING TROUBLE.
The? conference of representatives of r the -freezinc- companies, which was | held in Wellington yesterday, decided to stand firm in resisting the demands of the slaughtermen for 30s per hundred and other concessions. We ca.nnot, help thinking that the companies have acted precipitately in declining to open fresh negotiations with the men, for we feel certain that the difficulty could have been overcome had a conciliatory spirit been adopted. However, the companies presumably know their own business best. They have determined to fight, and the consequence will be that the majority of the works in the Dominion will be closed down in the course of a few days, hundreds of men" will be thrown out of employment, and thousands of pounds will be lost to the country. • The slaughtermen can save the position by accepting the compromise offered them. Will they do it?
