THE LATE JOHN BRYCE.
The death of the Hon. John Brvco removes from oitr m:dst one of itlie most striking personalities that the Dominion has possessed. He arrived in New -Zealand . seventy-two years ago, and played an important part, first as an officer in the Volunteers, and subsequently as Native Minister, in quelling the Native disturbances in."the North Island. He. had a distinguished career as ft politician, having been ' associated with several Ministries. He retired from polities in 1891 in a somewhat dramatic fashion. Ho was the leader of the Opposition when Mr Ballance took office, and he was made the subject of a vote of censure for using certain expressions reflecting on the Premier's conduct. Since then lie had lived in retirement. The late Johli Bryce dicl much to lay the foundation of settlement in this Dominion, and his name will go down in history as one who sacrificed himself for tho good of his fellows.
