FIRM OPENING

LONDON, January 14. The wool sales have opened. There is a very firm tone. Prices for merinos are against buyers. HIGH COMMISSIONER'S CABLE.
The Department of Agriculture. Industries, and Commerce, has received the following' cablegram from the High Commissioner for New Zealand, dated London, January 14, 1913, regarding the opening cf the first series of colonial wool sales :—"The wool sales have commenced. There is ;i. general and active demand, espeoiallv for merinos, which are slightly higher. For crossbreds the- mjirket 'is steady at previous quotations.'Supplies will be moderate. Trade is good. Tt is expected that present prices will continue, or advance. Thiity-nye-- thousand bales - of- ' New Zealand wools are catalogued."' '•■.
