ON THE TARIFF QUESTION. MEMORIAL TO THE LEADER. MR BONAIX LAWS REPLY. (Received January 15, 10.30 a.m.) LONDON, January M. ■ln his reply to the Unionists' memorial, handed to the Chief Whip of the Unionist L'arty, Mr Bonar Law says: — "The memorial asks u,s to retain the, leadership while altering in one very important particular, net indeed the policy of Imperial pre- - ferenoc, but the method whereby it can be most effectively canned out. The modification requested concerning a colonial conference doe;? not involve any principle which
prevents us> from loyally supporting the majority's desires; .nevertheless it would have been mare agreeable to ourselves and more for the party's interest that the changed method should have been, accompanied, by a , change; f>f leaders. The memorial, however.
singed by those desiring modification and those preferring that the method should remain unchanged, declares that a change of leadership would be fatal to the best interests of the party arid the country, and we feel, in view of such an expression, that it is our duty to comply with the request, and this wo are prepared to do."
