BIBLE IN SCHOOLS.
One of the strongest arguments that could be employed against the introduction of Bible-reading in schools, is that it would have a tendency to make sectarian belief a test in tho appointment of teachers. Already there is a suspicion, unhappily not unfounded, thai some of our Education Boards are influenced by religious considerations in the making of appointments. What the position would be were teachers called upon to interpret excerpts from the Bible,.can
only be. imagined. Th© first qualification of a- teacher should be his aptitude for teaching. His religious belief's, whatever they may be, should not l)e considered by those chary with the responsibility of appointment. If Bible-reading were allowed in our schools, a spirit of intolerance would be created which would -spell dis-aster to the system.
