THE TOTALISATOR.
That those who argued that the curtailing of the number of race days would minimise the gambling evil in the Dominion have been grievously mistaken, is proved by the follouing comparative statement of the totalisator receipts afc a dosten of the principal race meetings during the holiday season: 1912-13 1911-12 £ £ taranaki 22,364 18,235 Dunedin 32.840 23,4801 Manawiitu "73,315 56,318 Ha%vke's Bay 36,840 ' 21.647 Wairarapa .' 24,468 22,545 Marton 37,274 25,980 Auckland 180.355* 176,908 Stratford 21,954 18.525 Southland 29.198 21.081 Xorth Otaso 21,638 13,494" Auckland Trots ... 46.686 33,894 V Canterbury Park Trots ..' 36.840 21.647
The above, figures show an increase of over £IIO,OOO in the totalisafcor takings of the twelve principal meetings. They must come as a staggerer to Parliamentarian*, as they will to the general public. The moral is obvious.
