WELCOME ANNOUNCEMENT.
\ In replying to a deputation that waited upon, him at Hastings on Wednesday, tho Minister of Public Works , (Hon W. Fraser) stated that whilst \ he was the Minister, appeals for oxJ penditure for expenditure's sake ( would he firmly declined, and when a request was made which was against the public interests,' Tie would refuse it. This plain straightforward announcement will be received with satisfaction throughout the Dominion. The policy! of the past has been to scatter the loaves nnd fishes broadcast, irrespective of public requirements, and regardless of the finances, with the sole object of influencing votes. The Minister who has the courage to put a stop to this vicious practice may become unpopular for a time. In the end, however, he will be esteemed as a true friend to the noople. We congratulate the HOYI W. Fraser upon hig decision. ,
