LIGHT LINE RAILWAYS.
Speaking at Hastings the other evening on the subject of light .line,' railways, the' Minister of Public Works said: Ho supported a policy of light railways,' and thought that in some caseg they could be constructed almost as cheaply as roads. His on- ; gineers were now going' into the natter of cost, and when Parliament met lie hoped to have data | laid before the House which would justify a. system of light lines being commenced. Ho was not going to say where, because it might be found that it was not worth while adopting the system, but they had been a -sneeep? in other countrips and he did not see why they should not be in New Zealand.
In view of this statement, it is <le- ] sirable that the Minister should have the elainisS of the Pongaroa. district j brought immediately under iris notice. Tf it is impossible to secu're the authorisation of an ordinary gauge rnil-\ way between Masterton and Pongaroa. then let us go for the next best thine;, and secure a light line railway.
