CRUELTY TO ANIMALS
(Bu Telegraph—Press Atsociation.) TIMARU Last Night. At the Magistrate's Court, a drover oi' Gore, namedi George Russell, was chatted with cruelty to animals, by railing from Southland to Ashburtow ewes on the point of lambing. Some of the lambs were born in the trucks, and several ewes and lambs arrived dead, whilst others were in a bad condition. Sub-Inspector Cruickshank, who prosecuted!, expressed regret that those really responsible could iiot be brought before the Court, as the defendant was only engaged to look after the sheep on the journey. He, however had not done all" he might have done on the journey. Defendant pleaded! that there were no facilities, and he had done what lie could till the. train was divided at Bak-lutha. The bench, re-o-retted that the other parties we.ro rat chargeable. He fined defendant £1 and costs. The evidence indicated that the ewes were supposed to lamb in October, and the journey was ma die early iu September
